McGowan Government to deliver Capel Police Station

  • $8 million over two years to build dedicated Capel Police Station for local community and surrounds
  • Commitment comes after Liberal-National Government ignores community pleas about theft, hooning, graffiti, antisocial behaviour

Shadow Police Minister Michelle Roberts will visit Capel today to announce a McGowan Labor Government will build a new $8 million local police station to service the town and surrounds.

The Capel community has been calling for a dedicated local police station for many years to address long-held concerns about antisocial behaviour, theft, graffiti and hooning.

Ms Roberts said the Liberal-National Government had ignored the Capel community’s repeated appeals to build a local police station and a McGowan Labor Government would deliver the facility to improve safety in the region.

She said crime in WA had surged to unprecedented levels, with 2015-16 the worst year for crime under the Barnett Government.

Mr Murray said he had lobbied for a dedicated local station for many years after repeated requests from community members in the growing Capel region.

The new police station will provide a dedicated local police presence for Capel town and the surrounding shire, including the Boyanup, Gelorup, Peppermint Grove Beach and Dalyellup areas.

Comments from Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray:

“A McGowan Government will build a dedicated local police station in Capel to cut out antisocial behaviour, theft, graffiti and hooning.

“Capel people should not feel unsafe in their homes and with the crime levels in WA the way they are under this government we need to act.

“Capel is a growing community and with that unfortunately comes the burden of more crime. Our residents, particularly some of our elderly people, are feeling unsafe in their homes and this local station will do a lot to give people peace of mind.

“The slow response times when Capel residents report matters to the police is a serious issue. The new local station will ensure we have officers on the ground and ready to respond when called upon.

“The Barnett Government likes to talk big on crime but a McGowan Government will actually get on and build a local station to fight crime in Capel and the surrounding Boyanup, Gelorup, Peppermint Grove Beach and Dalyellup areas.”

Comments from Shadow Police Minister Michelle Roberts:

“The Barnett Government has ignored the Capel community’s pleas about the need for a dedicated local station for years and years now.

“Home invasions, graffiti on private property, hooning – these are all serious and ongoing issues for Capel people.”

“Under the Barnett Government crime has spiralled out of control across WA, and Capel people are certainly feeling the effects of the Liberal-National Government’s failure to provide a strong Police presence in Capel.”
